Caption
Spider phaetons were a racy carriage and would have been driven by gentlemen wishing to show off a pair of fine well bred horses equal in elegance to the carriage they were driven to. The Burlington Carriage Company were a prominent and highly regarded coachbuilders who built this spider phaeton at the end of the nineteenth century for the Lucy family. It is painted in black with red and white lining and carries the Lucy family crest on the side.

This is a conventional and very good Spider Phaeton with cut-under body with ogee back panel. The carriage is painted black with red and white lining on the wheels, a family crest is on the side panels.
Full description
Spider Phaetons are the most elegant in design of the phaeton group of carriages. Being of such an elegant design the spider phaeton was popular with gentlemen who wished to show off their fine well bred carriage horses.

Given to the National Trust in 1945.
