Summary
'Princes Centrepiece' by Frederick Elkington. Portrait figures of two young men in military uniform on a circular silver base. The smaller figure is holding the end of a coil of rope in his hands, the rest of the rope sits on the floor between the two figures. The figures are standing against a ship's compass, with glass sections to the top, which is stamped HMS BRITANNIA. The base is also hallmarked. Sits on a circular black lacquered wooden base which includes a silver plague inscribed 'To Captain H Fairfax RN from Prince Edward & Prince George of Wales on their leaving HMS Britannia July 25th 1879'. The young men depicted are Prince Albert Victor Christian Edward Duke of Clarence and Avondale (1864-1892) and Prince George Frederick Ernest Albert later King George V (1865–1936) as they appear in the Opaltypes (photograph on white, opaque glass) NT 532937.1-2
