Summary
An iron and steel strongbox, commonly called an 'Armada Chest', German, late 16th/early 17th century. Fitted to the outside with iron straps, to the front with two hasps for fitting padlocks, and to the ends with a part-wrythen iron handle. The lid with three hinges and a concealed keyhole and lifting to reveal a steel lock mechanism shooting several bolts. Used by the Lucy's to house estate papers.
