Summary
A set of eight twist-turned and carved oak chairs, comprising six chairs and a pair of armchairs, English, circa 1830, possibly by James Morris Willcox (died in 1859), the pattern of which appears to have been copied from that of the late 17th century walnut armchair (NT 532982); the caned back panel carved with leafy acanthus scrolls flanked by twist-turned posts issuing scrolling arms on similarly turned supports and legs, joined to the front by a foliate carved fore-rail centred by a fleur-de-lys, on square block feet.The needlework loose seats worked by Mary Elizabeth Lucy. J.M. Willcox executed the panelling designed by Thomas Willement (1786-1871) for the Library and the Dining room at Charlecote.
Provenance
Presented to the National Trust by Sir Montgomerie Fairfax-Lucy (1896 – 1965), two years after the death of his father, Sir Henry Ramsay-Fairfax, 3rd Bt (1870 – 1944), with Charlecote Park and its chief contents, in 1946.
