Summary
A rocking chair, oak, English, circa 1830, the shaped crest centred by a shield bearing the Lucy family coat of arms. The front seat rail is inscribed 'When wearie take reste'. The back panel is carved with a depiction of Apollo on his chariot, an inscription reads 'Ladie Joyce Lucie" with the date "1592' in reference to Joyce Acton Lucy, wife of the first Sir Thomas Lucy (died 1600). The back panel is flanked by scrolling arms and panelled sides, raised on bobbin-turned legs and on rockers. An almost identical chair, bearing the Cavendish coat of arms and motto, with a similar back panel, is at Hardwick hall (NT 1128070).
Provenance
Presented to the National Trust by Sir Montgomerie Fairfax-Lucy (1896 - 1965), two years after the death of his father, Sir Henry Ramsay-Fairfax, 3rd Bt (1870 – 1944), with Charlecote Park and its chief contents, in 1946.
Marks and inscriptions
The front seat is inscribed with 'When wearie take reste'. The back panel is carved with a depiction of Apollo on his chariot, and inscription reads 'Ladie Joyce Lucie' with the date '1592'.
