Summary
Gilt brass, Sir Robert Peel (Bury 1788 – London 1850), British (English) School, c. 1850, cartouche inscribed 'SIR ROBT PEEL/BORN FEB 5 1788 DIED JULY 2 1850, 'LV/R' in monogram below, mounted on a lozenge-shaped board covered with red velvet, fitted with suspension loop at top centre. A gilt brass commemorative relief plaque with a portrait of Sir Robert Peel, the British Conservative statesman who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1834 to 35 and 1841 to 1846, and twice as Home Secretary from 1822 to 1827 and 1828 to 1830. The image is derived from the portrait of Peel by Sir Thomas Lawrence (see NPG D39588, National Portrait Gallery, London). The portrait is framed by two cornucopia projecting from the mouths of lions facing left and right, and crested with a laurel wreath containing an image of a three-masted ship. The ship must refer to Peel's service during the Napoleonic Wars as Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies under Lord Liverpool, whose name may be represented in the monogram 'LV/R'. A type-written label containing details about Sir Robert Peel's son, the 3rd Baronet (1822-95), is attached to the verso and reads: 'Sir Robert Peel, (son of the Prime Minister) 1822-1895./Became Junior Lord of the Admiralty under Palmerston from 1855-1858.' An identical plaque, in a set with a portrait of Lord Byron (with whom Peel was at Harrow) and of the Duke of Wellington (with whom Peel formed a ministry), was sold at Christies (Sunday 30 November 2008, sale 5438, lot 161), which suggests that this plaque was also once part of a set of souvenirs commemorating the life of Peel.
