Summary
Limestone, an allegory of Winter as an old man, British (English) School, c. 1850-1925. The personification of Winter as a bearded old man, clad in a cloak tightly wrapped around his body against the cold, with a brazier by his proper left foot. A loose mid 19th to early 20th century interpretation of the statue of Winter attributed to Pierre Le Gros I (Chartres 1629 - Paris 1714) in the Louvre, Paris (inv.no. R.F. 2324). Mounted on Ketton pedestal with frostwork.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
