Silver gilt tankard and cover, The British Empire Cup, body with strapwork and cartouche engraved with inscription, scroll handle with lions mask, cover surmounted by 2 fighting stallions. English by Robert Garrard 1867. Weight 220 ounces. Inscribed on base 'The British Empire Cup, Northolt Park Racecourse, 24th May 1937', 'Nun Quam Non Paratus', 'Won by Edward Mason's Stolen Gold'. Inscribed on cup 'The 88th renewal of the Derby Stakes at Epsom 1867 won by Mr H Chaplin's chestnut colt Hermit by New Minster out of Seclusion'. Stamped on base of cup 'RandS Garrard, Panton St, London'. Stamped on top of stand 'R.A. Miles, 34 Gt Queen St, WC2'. Hallmarked to right of handle.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
