Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on card, Queen Elizabeth I (1533–1603) by Artur Szyk (Lodz 1894 - New Caanan 1951). Middle-aged woman, three-quarter length, facing with her head turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator. Wearing an embroidered and jewelled dress, set off with a white lace open ruff and a standing white lace collar from which is suspended a white lace cloak; wearing am embroidered and bejewelled blue gauntlet on her left hand and holding her right gauntlet in the same hand, in her right she holds the jewelled handle of a white ostrich feather-fan held in her left hand, pearls in her hair, ship in the background to the left. Royal coat-of-arms to the top right.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
