Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum, Queen Elizabeth I (1533–1603) after Nicholas Hilliard (Exeter c.1547 – London 1619). Half-length portrait, facing, head turned slightly to the left, her right hand holding two white roses at the breast, her left hand not visible; tight curly auburn hair with a bejewelled and enamelled circlet headdress from which a veil falls, small neck and wrist ruffs; wearing an elaborate black gown embroidered with gold leaves and pearls, in a lattice pattern, the sleeves with small slashes at the top with puffs of gauze, secured by jewels in gold mounts; square low neck to dress covered with partlet of embroidered lace, a jewelled carcanet of enamelled gold and jewels, beneath which hang two gold necklaces, also an enamelled and jewelled necklace worn on the neckline of the dress from which hangs a Phoenix pendant. Bright pale-blue background.

Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
