Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, An Unknown Lady by circle of Samuel Cotes (London 1734 – Chelsea 1818). 1770s. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait, turned three-quarters to the right, gazing at spectator, wearing a pink dress with slender white gauze fichu tied with a small bow at the neckline, Brown eyes, pink complexion, light brown towering hair with ringlets falling on each shoulder and tied at the crown with a white gauze kerchief. Plain drab background. No.23 in Guide 'Miniature of Lady unknown, by John Smart, who was one of the important miniature painters of C18, born 1741, died 1811'. Catalogue entry 'A Lady, circa 1770, with high dressed hair and side ringlets, head and shoulders, 3/4 right, in pink dress with white scarf. Oval'.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
