Summary
Mahogany longcase clock, in Chippendale tradition, painted lunar movements, inscribed 'Theodore B. Starr, New York', c.1900. 8-day chiming longcase clock in mahogany case. 3 train, 4 pillar movement with dead beat escapement, mercury compensation pendulum and rack striking and chiming on 9 tubular bells. Harrison's maintaining power. Brass break-arch dial with moon-phase and lunar calendar in the arch. Flat gilt brass scroll spandrels. Silvered brass chapter ring with applied gilt brass Arabic numerals. 'Chime/Silent' and '8 bells/Westminster Chimes' dials to upper left and right of chapter ring, respectively. Flat, gilt brass applied decoration to dial centre, with seconds dial and maker's name plate signed. Blued steel hands. Strike/Silent lever at 9.00. Solid mahogany case. Scroll pediment hood with fluted corinthian caped columns and bevelled glass front. Corinthian capped and fluted quarter columns to trunk. Double skirting to panelled base. Most probably of English origin, made for retailing in the US, possibly by one of the Clerkenwell makers. Graham pendulum.
