Summary
A walnut, deal and upholstered settee, in the manner of William Kent, English, circa 1840 18th century style. The heavily carved top rail with scrolled parchment corners centred by a Ducal Coronet and S scroll and leaf carved pediment, the shaped down swept arms with over-scrolled terminals and with leaf and scale carved detail. Upholstered back and solid plank seat with loose cushions raised on S scrolled legs centred by caryatids and a vase and cover with gadrooned edge. The design of this settee is taken in part from a suite of furniture supplied by William Kent to the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery for Wanstead House circa 1730. The suite is gilded but bears similar carved detail and proportion.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
