Summary
Watercolour on paper, The Circular Temple Lawn, Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire: 1955, by Leonard Russell Squirrell (Ipswich 1893 – 1979). 1955, signed and dated l.l. The Temple Lawn created to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Ten Corinthian columns of Portland stone which were once at Chesterfield House, Isaac Ware's Palladian masterpiece placed in a circle. Recumbent lions cast in lead by Jan Van Nost the Elder (1668-1729). The central feature is a replica of Bernini's 'David', the original of which is in the Villa Borghse, Rome, was executed in 1901 by the Italian sculptor G. Fossi. Mounted on card.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
