Summary
Needlework picture, 'A Country Lane'. Silk, watercolour rectangular needlework picture, a view of a country lane, stitched in silk and coloured in watercolour. Fields, trees and thatched cottages to either side, a horseman talking to a group of seated ladies to the right; a pig in the foreground. Glazed in rectangular giltwood frame, inner leaf border. Inscribed - I should like this to go to Paul Benthall or Richard Benthall either of whom will conserve it well. MHS Beware Do not hang in bright light. The rotting silk of this picture is kept in place by pressure between the glass and the back board. Worked by Mrs Selina Skull Died 1813 (hand written notes in black felt-tip attached to back). James Benthall believes 'MHS' refers to Sir Paul Benthall's cousin Mary Smythe. 1810 (circa).
