Summary
One of twenty five carved wooden armorial shields, hung on two brass hooks and painted with the coat of arms of the Searle family. Argent a chevron sable between three doves proper (black chevron between three doves, painted in their natural colours, on silver shield). Shield may show chevron gules (red chevron). Inscribed - SEARLE of ALLERTON Devon (hand written in biro on back). 1935 (circa).
Provenance
Made circa 1935. Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Bequeathed to The National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983. Accepted for ownership by The National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
