Summary
Watercolour on paper, William Searle Benthall (1778-1854) by Laura Benthall (1827-1912). Half-length portrait of an elderly man, facing, with grey hair, his right hand resting inside his open waistcoat; wearing a brown coat and a white cravat. Inscribed - biographical details written in black ink on paper label pasted on reverse. 1850 (circa). The portrait is by his daughter.
Provenance
Painted by Laura Benthall circa 1850. Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Bequeathed to The National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983. Accepted for ownership by The National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
