Summary
Watercolour on paper, Mary Anne Marshall, Mrs William Searle Benthall (1780-1866) by Laura Benthall (1827-1912). Half-length portrait of and elderly lady turned slightly to the right. Wearing a black dress, white fichu, lace cap and spectacles, reading a book held in her right hand. Glazed in modern narrow giltwood frame, beaded borders. Inscribed - Mrs William Searle Benthall Sketch by her daughter Laura Benthall; Also - S.Pierce (frame maker's label on reverse). 1800 - 1900.
Provenance
Painted by Laura Benthall, daughter of Mrs William Searle Benthall, citca 19th Century. Frame made by S. Pierce. Owned by Mary Clementina Benthall (1879-1960) and recorded in the 1957 list of pictures, furniture etc suggested for retention at Benthall Hall by the National Trust. Transferred to the ownership of the National Trust with the contents of Benthall Hall in the Deed Of Gift made by Mary Clementina Benthall and dated 8th August 1958. Recorded in the Inventory Of National Trust Property At Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963.
