Summary
Watercolour on paper, Indian Scene with Figures by a Tree by Clementina Marshall, Mrs Edward Benthall (d.1905). A small crowd of Indian peasants sit beside a large tree watching a performing acrobat balancing on a stilt; in the background to the right a large white building with blue shutters. Unframed, pasted on cardboard backing. Inscribed - Painted by Mrs Edward Benthall in India / or Burmah. Given by her to her son Winfred Benthall Xmas 1904 (written on label); 1850 (circa).
Provenance
Painted by Clementina Marshall, wife of Edward Benthall, circa 1850. Given by Clementina Marshall to her son Winfred Benthall, Christmas 1904. Owned by Mary Clementina Benthall (1879-1960) and recorded in the 1957 list of pictures, furniture etc suggested for retention at Benthall Hall by the National Trust. Transferred to the ownership of the National Trust with the contents of Benthall Hall in the Deed Of Gift made by Mary Clementina Benthall and dated 8th August 1958. Recorded in the Inventory Of National Trust Property At Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963.
