Summary
Watercolour on paper, Mary Anne Marshall, Mrs William Searle Benthall (1780-1866) by Laura Benthall (1827-1912). Half-length portrait of an elderly lady, turned slightly to the right gazing down at an open book which she holds up in front of her. Wearing a black dress with a shawl and white lace bonnet. Plain brown background. Biographical details written in black ink on paper label pasted on reverse. 1850 (circa).
Provenance
Painted by Laura Benthall circa 1850. Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Bequeathed to The National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983. Accepted for ownership by The National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
