Summary
Silhouette, paper, Edward Benthall (1807-1889), by Hubard Gallery. Full-length in profile to the left, standing with his arms folded, wearing a high collared coat, trousers and necktie. Gilt highlighting. Companion to BHH/D/034. Inscribed - TAKEN AT THE HUBARD GALLERY (paper stamp bottom right and impressed), Edward Benthall probably about 1840 (bottom left). 1840 (circa). Edward Benthall was the son of William Searle Benthall (1778-1854) and Mary Anne Marshall (1780-1846). Married Clementina Marshall (d.1905).
Provenance
Created circa 1840. Owned by Mary Clementina Benthall (1879-1960) and recorded in the 1957 list of pictures, furniture etc suggested for retention at Benthall Hall by the National Trust. Transferred to the ownership of the National Trust with the contents of Benthall Hall in the Deed Of Gift made by Mary Clementina Benthall and dated 8th August 1958. Recorded in the Inventory Of National Trust Property At Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963. Recorded in the Sotheby's Inventory and Valuation of Benthall Hall dated July 1992.
