Summary
A nineteenth century Persian, Afshar rug with wool warp, weft and a Turkish knot pile; cut and rejoined to create a prayer rug. The angular mihrab (prayer niche) has navy field covered with angular lozenge motifs, flanked by cream spandrels. The principle border has a cream ground with a repeated angular pattern. Bordered by multiple guard stripes. One end with flatweave edge; fringing to both ends.
Provenance
Purchased in 1980 by the National Trust, possibly from Bond Street Carpets (?). Displayed in Library bay window until 2008
