Summary
A modern carpet of Ushak design. The carpet is of a central medallion design on a deep red ground in a style dating from the late eighteenth century, which was very popular in Britain in the early nineteenth century. The carpet is hand knotted in wool on a cotton warp and weft.
Provenance
This type of design was chosen after looking at old photographs of room in the house. Ushak was a city in Anatolia and has been one of the most important weaving areas since the fourteenth century. Carpets from Ushak have been imported in to Britain since the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries usually made to order for larger houses and churches. Many appear in paintings from this period and the designs are named after the artists Lotto and Holbein. (See letter dated 30.6.1997 from David Bamford to James Rothwell)
