Summary
One of a pair of modern runners made to imitate sixteenth century Karaman Turkish designs. The inner design is composed of connected beam crosses, probably originally floral motifs from Osmanli times, broad contour bands run out in geometric forms. Hand knotted with wool on a cotton warp and weft.
Provenance
These types of designs were chosen after looking at old photographs of room in the house. The city of Karaman was a very important religious and trading centre in central Anatolia south of Konya, on the trade route from Constantinople in the North and to Syria and Jerusalem in the south (see letter dated July 30th 1997 from David Bamford to James Rothwell).
