Summary
Bronze sculpture, The Great Peasant by Aimé-Jules Dalou (Paris 1838 - Paris 1902), 1897/1902. A bronze sculpture by Jules Dalou depicting a peasant labourer, possibly a stone breaker preparing to work. Standing, full-length, on stone strewn ground with pickaxe between his feet; head bent over; rolling up his right sleeve. Wearing peasant attire and clogs. This is a cast of the peasant that was to crown Dalou's uncompleted 32-metre Monument aux Ouvriers (Worker's Monument). Twelve others were to be placed in the niches around its base, terracotta models of which are in the Musee du Petit Palais, Paris. Another, posthumous, cast of 1904 is also in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris.
