An early nineteenth century plaster cast frieze after the original from the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae near Phigaleia in Greece, circa late 5th century BC. The upper section represents the battle between Centaurs and Lapiths.
Provenance
Original to the House. These primary plaster casts, made from the originals in the British Museum, were given to Thomas Legh (1793-1857) by the British Government in gratitude for his assistance in excavating and arranging the transportation of the originals to Britain in 1813. Returned in 1948.
