Summary
Pastel on paper, Frances Legh of Bruch, Mrs Peter Legh XII (1670-1728) (after Sir Godfrey Kneller) by Sybil Dulcibella Jane Legh (1859-1960). A copy of a three-quarter length portrait of a woman, body facing slightly left with long dressed dark hair; coloured chalks on paper. Wearing a white chemise with frilled sleeves and low neckline underneath a gold cloak with blue trimming draped over her right shoulder and around her waist and legs. Sitting with her right arm supported on her leg and her left across her waist holding onto her cloak. Set in a landscape with a dark sky and trees to the right in the background.
Provenance
Original to the House. Drawn by Dulcibella Legh (1859-1960), the eldest daughter of the First Lord Newton. The drawing is a copy of an original which used to be displayed at Lyme in the Entrance Hall (stated on old inventory card). It originally belonged to Lady Langford (Mabel Maud Legh), sister of Sybil and is thought to have been given to Lyme around 1985 by Mrs M.E. Packer. The image did not arrive in Mrs Packer's gift of 1992 therefore it must have been previous to this.
