Summary
One of a pair in a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. An outdoor scene with sloping ground across the foreground dotted with cacti. Two figures sit on the sloping ground, which terminates in a building with carved arched windows flanked by columns. A wall projects from the left with a group of seated figures and cactus on top and there is a ruined wall on the right. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the fifth portfolio.
