Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. An outdoor scene with rocks to the left and across the foreground; the rocks to the left have a series of steps carved into them. Across the middle distance, a stretch of grass with two small figures flanked by a herd of deer. A rock face dominates the scene behind with a façade carved into it with two storeys, a rectangular entrance flanked by columns and a pointed finial to the top. Rocks around the scene with steps cut into them and a gap to the right reveals the mountains beyond. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the fifth portfolio.
