Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. A desert scene with a ruined wall in the foreground and a grassy bank to the left. Two seated figures are on the grassy bank, one figure holding a stick and they look out onto a valley with rock formations either side. A path winds from the bank to the centre of the valley, terminating with a ruined building in front of a rock face. The rock face has various small openings. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the fifth portfolio.
