Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. A landscape with a terrace/roof top in the foreground and a bay behind. The terrace is half in shadow with two figures wearing yellow robes and white head-dresses. The terrace is surrounded by a wood and looks out onto a bay, which curves to the right and terminates in a castle by the sea. On the cliff top lies a city with various towers and buildings with flat roofs. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the fifth portfolio.
