Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. A landscape with grass and bushes in the foreground with a temple behind. Three figures in the foreground, one standing in front of the middle distance which has a ruined wall with a green tent in front. A temple stands behind the wall near to six free-standing columns on the left. One of the columns leans against the main body of the temple and there are hills in the distance to the left. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the fifth portfolio.
