Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. A landscape with a view of a rock formation with large boulders and two figures seated on a boulder in the foreground. A ravine runs centrally through the scene flanked by rock formations, which are joined at the top by a naturally formed bridge. The ravine is filled with boulders and stones overshadowed by the formation and more rocks are visible through the bridge. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the fifth portfolio.
