Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. A desert scene with a rock formation in the foreground. The rock has two bushes growing from it and a square entrance carved from it on the right. A male figure sits against the rocks wearing a red head-dress and holding a stick. Extending across the middle ground is a rock formation with various carved rectangular entrances, openings and a flight of steps on the right. In the distance to the left is a stretch of water. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the fifth portfolio.
