Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. An outdoor scene set within the courtyard of a building. Various figures are gathered in the scene including three men dressed in dark robes to the right and another group beside them rest on a step overlooking the courtyard. The building surrounding the courtyard has a bell tower to the left and a facade facing the step with arched windows supported by columns. The building has a white domed roof and there are smaller figures dotted around the courtyard. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the fourth portfolio.
