Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. Depicts the interior of a chamber with a dome and various rooms extending from it. Two figures are seated in the foreground on a step and with two figures on a step opposite. The building is decorated with black and white, red and white stripes and with arched entrances to the rooms. In the background, another chamber is visible with various doorways and painted decoration. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the third portfolio.
