Summary
One of a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. A landscape with a rocky foreground and three figures to the right. In the middle distance, a rock face stretches from the left to the right. It has a series of rectangular openings with three plain columns and a small group of figures nearby. Group of palm trees in the far distance to the right. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the third portfolio.
