Summary
One of a pair in a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. A sepia scene depicting the top of a hill overlooking a town. Two figures in the foreground holding pipes with other figures and mules at the top of the hill. Rocks behind with an entrance decorated with heirogyphics to the left. In the distance below on the far right, a city with various towers and domes. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the third portfolio.
