Summary
One of a pair in a set of landscapes; watercolour on paper. A street scene with stoney ground in the foreground. The street runs down the left side lined with a row of buildings with two storeys. A building dominates the scene with an ornate marble arch carved with serrated patterns, surrounding the entrance and supported by columns. There is a seated figure near a doorway in the entrance and various other figures around the building. Mounted within a bound portfolio.
Provenance
Thomas Legh (1792-1857) travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt in the early 19th century. He produced his own drawings of this but they did not survive. In 1841 Viscount Castlereagh undertook a similar journey and he employed Anton Schranz to produce a record of his travels. He had them bound into a series of portfolios, this set is the first portfolio.
