Summary
An elm and oak upright spinning wheel, Dutch or English, 19th century. With remains of an orange red stain or paint in places. Having two finial-topped rectangular-section wheel posts set into a table with two cut corners and moulded edge, standing on four turned legs fitted with a treadle. The wide wheel rim with short turned spokes. -- A very similar wheel at Snowshill Manor, possibly by the same maker.
Provenance
Date of introduction to Canons Ashby not recorded but there in July 1980, when purchased by the National Trust for £50 at the auction of the contents of Canons Ashby by Berry Bros. of Brackley, when it was illustrated in the catalogue (Lot 272).
