Summary
Two porcelain bowls, one of Japanese Arita manufacture, c.1890 (CAN/C/5a) of deep form with outward flaring rim, painted in the imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red, with two shaped panels of flowering trees, the tree friends of winter pine prunus and bamboo, alternating with phoenix in flight, heightened with gold. The other bowl (CAN/C/5b) is of Chinese manufacture of the Qianlong period 1736-1795, of hemispherical form painted in the famille-rose palette with peony and exotic flowers, Jingdezhen, c.1740-50.
