Summary
A Carlo Maratta gadrooned frame for a group portrait (NT/PET/P/149) by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) of the younger children of Charles I in 1647 with compo elements overall, applied to pinewood, with water and oil gilding.
Provenance
The picture was commissioned in 1647 by the 10th Earl of Northumberland (1602-1668), in whose custody the children were placed after the fall of Oxford and was painted at Syon. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
