Summary
One of a pair of coffee mugs with colour transfer prints of King George VI (1895-1952) and Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002), Royal insignia and flags of countries in the British Empire. Made to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI in 1937. King George VI's Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 12th May 1937, following the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII, in 1936. He was crowned King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth, and as Emperor of India. Dominions were self-governing nations in the British Empire, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and, as such, flags and symbols of these, and other, countries often feature on commemorative ceramics from this period.
