Summary
One of a pair of ivory portrait reliefs, King George IV (1762-1830) as Prince of Wales, British, early nineteenth century. The Prince of Wales faces right, wearing a jacket with a high collar and cravat with the collar of the Order of the Garter, a chain worn around the neck. The collar is composed of enamel plaques depicting the garter with the motto of the Order 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' (Shame on he who thinks ill of it), surrounding a rose, each separated by elaborate gold knots. The star of the Order of the Garter can be seen on a cloak draped over his right shoulder. He is depicted without a wig. Displayed in a gilt wooden frame with composite moulded decoration in the form of acanthus leaves and scallop shells in each corner.
