Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour painting on ivory. Previously identified as Mary Sarah Hibbert Oates, Mrs Wynter Thomas Blathwayt (1834-1935) by Edward Tayler (Orbe, Switzerland 1828 – London 1906). This is unlikley as recent evidence suggests that Mary Sarah Hibbert Oates was of mixed race, possibly Jamaican. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young woman, turned to the left, gazing to the left, in a white dress, coloured shawl, doublepearl earrings, fine gold necklace, chain with pearl pendant. Brown eyes, brown hair in ringlets, one ringlet falling on her left shoulder, aged 30 to 35. - Mary Sarah Blathwayt Oates (d.1925). Married 1876 Rev W.T.Blathwayt (1825-1909), Rector of Dyrham 1875 and Squire 1899, second wife. Signed E. Taylor in brown leather case. Old no DYR.P.3. Inscribed - E. Tayler. 1828 - 1906.
Provenance
Indigenous collection purchased by Ministry of Works in 1954 and given to Dyrham Park in 1961.
