Carrara marble on turned marble socle, John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow, GCH, FRS, MP (1779-1853) by Joseph Nollekens, RA (1737–1823), signed ‘Nollekins Ft 1810’ on truncation at rear. A portrait bust of John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow, head to the left, cloak fastened with fibula over right shoulder.
Full description
The bust was shown at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1810 (see ‘Bust of the Right Hon. Lord Brownlow’, Smith 1829, p.79). Nollekens also produced busts of John Cust's late father Sir Brownlow Cust (NT 436762, dated 1809), his late wife, Lady Sophia Brownlow (NT 436758, dated 1815) and the prime ministers Pitt the Younger (NT 436765, dated 1810) and Spencer Perceval (NT 436768, dated 1813).
