Summary
The Belton wine cistern of sterling silver weighing 1457 ounces. Made for the Speaker of the House of Commons Sir John Cust (1718-1770). The body of oval bombe form supported by four cast scroll feet enriched with sprays of laurel foliage below a chased band of vines and scrolls. The incurved upper part engraved on one side with the royal Arms of George the III with Garter motto and Crown flanked by the initials G.R.III, and on the other with the arms of the recipient. The undulating rim gadrooned, curling upwards at the end to open scrollwork, the handles formed as the Royal Supporters, lion and unicorn, their rear paws and hooves resting on upwards springing double scrolls. In the interior at the ends applied with large cut-card leaf sprays. Made by Thomas Heming and dated 1770.
