Photograph, Adelbert Salusbury Cockayne Cust, 5th Baron Brownlow (1867-1927) by Alexander Bassano (1829-1913). Half-length photographic portrait of the 5th Baron Brownlow. He is shown wearing military uniform with three medals - facing left Signed ' Brownlow'and inscribed 'Bassano'. Adelbert Salusbury Cockayne Cust, 5th Baron Brownlow of Belton was born on 14 September 1867. He was the son of Henry Francis Cockayne-Cust (1819-1884) and Sara Jane Cookson (d.1867). He married Maud Buckle (1870-1936), daughter of Captain S. Buckle, on 5 October 1895. Deputy Lieutenant of Lincolnshire. Fought in the First World War. He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Reserve of Officers. He succeeded to the title of 5th Baron Brownlow of Belton on 17 March 1921. He was Mayor of Grantham 1924-1925. Was made Honorary Colonel of the 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Was appointed Paymaster General 1887 and wasUnder Secretary of State for War (1889-92); Ecclesiastical Commissioner; Trustee of the National Gallery; and was ADC to King Edward VII. His three children were: 1.Elizabeth Barbara Cust (1896 - 1913) 2. Peregrine Francis Adelbert Cust (1899 - 1978) 6th Baron Brownlow 3. Sarah Marie Adelaide Cust (1906 - 1992) married Edward Jan Hoos He died on 19 April 1927 at age 59.
