Summary
Pastel on paper, Savile Cockayne Cust (1698-1772) as a Child, attributed to Mrs Pawling (fl. c.1690-c.1700). Three-quarter-length, portrait of a child standing by a fountain. He has blond hair and wears a white dress with a red drape. Amateur style the head is over large. Known as 'Cavil Cust', on account of his litigious nature. Only surviving child of Sir Pury Cust and Alice Savile, who added the name Cockayne when he inherited the Cockayne Hatley estate from his cousin Samuel in 1745. A constant visitor at Belton and Grantham, hence his inclusion in both Mercier's Tyrconnel conversation piece (436139) and Seeman's Cust family-piece (436045)
