Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour painting on paper, Frances Bankes, Lady Brownlow (1756 – 1847). British (English) School. Rectangular. Half-length portrait of an elderly lady, turned to the right, gazing to the right, seated in a red-upholstered chair, wearing a black dress, black shawl and lace bonnet tied under her chin with a blue-silk bow. Pale brown hair with a centre parting and tight curls on either side and tied with a ribbon. Frances Bankes, Lady Brownlow was the daughter of Sir Henry Bankes (1711-1774) an alderman and merchant of London and Frances Pembrooke; married in 1775 as his second wife, Sir Brownlow Cust, 1st Baron Brownlow of Belton (1744-1807) and brought with her a dowry of £100,000, and a collection of her father's pictures. She also bore him eleven children
